Donna’s Story written by Az

January 9, 2012 in Your Stories | Organ Donor Recipients

Donna MansellThis isn’t the full story of Donna’s Transplant history. Its not even a fraction, but this is my account of the time i spent with someone who would go on to change my life, my future and bring hope to many people who desperately wait for a life changing or saving transplant.

This is Donna Mansell’s story.

Written by me, her husband Az.

Its May 2008. I’ve been working 7 days a week, 10 hours a day running a kitchen for a local pub. All my kitchen staff had left due to arguments with the manager which left me to do all day everyday on my own. I was tired, miserable and a lot of the time lonely. Along came Mike. He had applied for kitchen work a few times but his phone number got lost in the myriad of notes and invoices on the notice board at work. This particular time he decided to walk in, a pushy move which worked for him. I liked his attitude and his perseverance and i thought enough was enough working on my own. We took him on and started him that week.

Leah Biggs | Third time lucky with a little help from two kinds of Heroes

December 30, 2011 in Your Stories | Organ Donor Recipients

To donor families and all potential donor families

Where to start… 29th June 1988 sounds like a good place.

On the 29th June 1988 at The Countess of Chester Hospital,  a new bundle of joy was born to Janis and Michael Harrison. Unfortunately before the parents had chance to meet their new baby girl, nurses whisked her way. It was a nerve wracking time for the couple as they were told doctors had been called and tests were being conducted on their baby girl, whom they came to name Leah.

Eventually senior doctors  summoned the couple into a room and proceeded to shatter  their dreams. The test results had shown Leah to have a left ventricle diverticulum. A rare condition affecting the heart muscle, causing it to sag and create an excess pouch causing the heart not to function properly. This tiny helpless baby only a few hours old was given just two months to live.

Christy Millar – Six years and still on Dialysis

December 9, 2011 in Featured, Latest News, Your Stories | Organ Donor Recipients

Christy sent me her story earlier on this week and it goes to show how long some people have to wait until they get a transplant. I do hope Christy’s call comes soon… Az x

Christy Millar Kidney PatientMy name is Christy Millar and I am a 26 year old dialysis patient. I have been on dialysis for nearly six years, as a result of a burst appendix in 2006 which caused multiple organ failure due to septacaemia and peritonitis (ie. blood poisoning). I had just finished my first degree literally the week before. I was hospitalised initially for six months where I spent much of that in a coma in intensive care.

Chris Cooke – Practically wears his HEART on his sleeve

December 2, 2011 in Featured, Your Stories | Organ Donor Recipients

This story is one ive been waiting for for a while now!

I had the pleasure of meeting Chris when Donna was still around and only really knew about him what she had told me and what i learned that day. Im so glad he took the time to write and share his story of waiting for a transplant. Enjoy..

Az :)

I can’t begin to express how many times I’ve put off writing this story, it has been a long time coming and I guess my main excuse, and you could say fear, is that I feel my story isn’t quite finished yet, but then again when is anyone’s? Given the amount of attention Organ Donation has been given in recent weeks I think it’s probably time for me to knuckle down and write it, it’s also the least I can do for the amazing people who represent Donna’s Dream. I do actually like to do my own bit of writing but it’s of the fictional variety, so you must understand this is all pretty new to me, but I thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Lets help Ben fulfill his Bucket List

November 25, 2011 in Featured, Latest News, Your Stories | Organ Donor Recipients

ben hughes bucket listA while ago i posted an amazing self-penned story by Ben Hughes (link at the end of the post) who had received a Heart and Lung transplant at the QE Birmingham and had also recently married the love of his life Ayla.

Sadly Ben received the news that his new lungs were in chronic rejection and can not be cured. He has endured 10 weeks of radiotherapy to slow down the rejection process (yes, the very same treatment Donna received) and now needs constant oxygen and is in a wheelchair. They have since been told that Ben will be lucky to be here in 6 months time.

Bill Coons incredible Book tells the story of surviving a Double Transplant

August 12, 2011 in Your Stories | Organ Donor Recipients

Bill Coon SwimI have been meaning to post a blog about this book for quite a while now and finally its here!

Bill Coon, the author of “Swim – A memoir of survival” was born with a congenital heart defect and soon after became one of the first infant heart transplantees in the American Midwest. Bill’s new heart started to fail when he was around 20 and due to a lifetime of medication his kidneys also started to fail.

Knowing that he was facing end-stage heart AND kidney failure Bill started to journal his thoughts and experiences. Before long these diary entries formed the basis of a riveting book telling the story of a journey that would put this young mans inner strength to the test.

Louise Hooman-Cox Vs Cancer, Strokes and Transplants.
Winner: Louise Hooman-Cox

Louise Hooman-CoxNot many people can say they grew up by the beach. I however was very lucky to boast this claim as every weekend from March- November would be spent at the caravan without fail. School holidays would pass by in a sunny swirl of swimming, going to the beach with friends from all over the country and heading to Rhyl for an ice-cream. However other memories would soon be made at this happy place as it was here where my battle began.

Ben Hughes – Married in Slippers, Heart & Lungs and a bloke called Fergie

May 12, 2011 in Featured, Latest News, Your Stories | Organ Donor Recipients

“One day back in 83, was when this bundle of joy crashed on to the scene, Was alright for a week or two, then all of a sudden, I started to throw.” So wrote the start of a rap I wrote Back in my college days for a piece of work that never got finished.

I arrived on April 25th 1983, Born to young parents (mother 17, dad 21) I lived with my mum at her nans house. Not long after I was born I started to projectile vomit, my mother being concerned phoned for an ambulance and I was taken to Shrewsbury Hospital. There they couldn’t really find what was wrong so I was transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Once there they cut my chest open and examined, I was found to have a condition called Aortic Stenosis. A narrowing of the aorta meaning it wasnt able to pump blood around my body properly A little bit of tinkering took place, i was patched back up and was put under the care of Dr Silove (He was implicated in an investigation at the childrens hospital a few years back) and Dr Bryce n Shrewsbury. I had 6 monthly check ups and lived a very active life up until the age of 14.

Help Amelia Scholey raise £10k for Organ Donation

February 8, 2011 in Latest News, Your Stories | Organ Donor Recipients

amelia-scholeyAmelia Scholey has set herself a tough challenge. She aims to raise £10,000 to be split equally between the British Heart Foundation and Live Life Then Give Life by August 2012 as well as promoting organ donation.

Her reason? Amelia is celebrating 10 years since her life saving heart transplant due to Restrictive Cardiomyopathy.

Unfortunately Amelia lost her father to heart problems as well as her brother suddenly due to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in October 2001. Soon after she found out she had the disease she was put on the list and a heart was found. Sadly this heart would not beat so she was put on a heart machine until another heart could be found. Luckily, that heart soon came and now, 10 years on, Amelia hopes to raise awareness for organ donation.
